From older Cezair, from Ottoman Turkish جزائر(Cezair), from Arabic اَلْجَزَائِر(al-jazāʾir, the islands), plural of جَزِيرَة(jazīra, island), referring to the several small islands that once existed in the Bay of Algiers.
