Etymology

First attested before 1999. Calque of French République démocratique du Congo (Democratic Republic of the Congo), the country's official French name. The corresponding state name was used from 1964 until 1971 and was restored in 1997 after the country had been known as Zaïre (Zaire). For the further origin of Kongo, see that entry.
