Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as dunren in 1276. Etymology uncertain. Proposed etymologies include a compound of Old Dutch dun (dune) and *wari (inhabitants), a compound of dun and horn (corner), a compound of don (taut, long) and hari (ridge covered in forest) and, finally, a derivation from a term cognate to don (pulled taut).

See also Dutch Low Saxon Dundern.
