Summary

Description
English: The various parts of how a train (in this case a British Rail Class 313 collects electric current from a third rail power supply:
  • Yellow - the electrified third rail
  • Green - ceramic pots support the third rail and insulate the electric current from the ground. This rail does not take any of the train's weight and so needs much less support than the running rails.
  • Blue - the metal (traditionally cast iron) shoe (or pickup shoe) slides along one surface of the third rail (in this case the top surface) connecting the rail and train.
  • Red - the shoebeam is made of non-conducting material, traditionally wood but now more usually fibreglass, supports the shoe. The shoebeam is usually attached to the bogey.
  • Cyan - Electric cables carry the electricity from the pickup shoe to the motors. The return current (not illustrated here) passes through the train wheels to the running rails.
    • Collectively, the shoe, shoebeam and (sometimes) the electrical cables) are known as shoegear.
