Etymology

From Old Swedish Halland. Likely from (dialectal) hall (“more or less flat section of rock surface”) +‎ land (“land”), referring to the cliff formation Hovs hallar. Originally the term only referred to the southern region of today's Halland, thus possibly meaning "the land north of Hovs Hallar".

As demonym first attested in 550 as Medieval Latin Hallin. As geographical area first attested in the mid-12th century as Medieval Latin Hallandia. In Old Swedish first attested in the 1280s as Hallandi.
