From Arabic هَاشِمِيّ ‎(hāšimiyy, Hashemite) with English suffix -ite, from هَاشِم ‎(hāšim, Hashim). The name signifies "breaker of bread", from هَشَمَ ‎(hašama, to destroy, smash).
