From Middle High German heileger geist, from Old High German heilagēr geist, formed by Anglo-Saxon missionaries as a calque of Old English Hāliġ Gāst, itself a calque of Latin Spīritus Sānctus, itself a calque of Ancient Greek Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον (Pneûma tò Hágion).
