From Middle High German der heilege geist, from Old High German der heilago geist, formed by Anglo-Saxon missionaries after Old English hālig gāst, itself after Latin Spiritus Sanctus, itself after Ancient Greek Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον (Pneûma tò Hágion), from πνεῦμα (pneûma, breath, vital force, soul) + ἅγιος (hágios, holy).
