Etymology

Phono-semantic matching of English Huey P. Long, imitating a Vietnamese name by combining Huỳnh +‎ Phi +‎ Long, of which Huỳnh is a common family name, Phi a common middle name, and Long a common masculine given name, in complete opposition to the English naming order. Phi is a spelling pronunciation of English pee, the name of the letter P. Consistent with traditional Vietnamese naming practices, the name has a positive literal meaning, "yellow flying dragon". This literal meaning evokes the soaring appearance of Long's namesake, the Huey P. Long Bridge, with which most local Vietnamese Americans are familiar.

Đây là cây cầu kết hợp đường bộ và đường xe lửa có độ cao tĩnh không 47 mét (cao nhất thế giới), độ cao tàu thuyền có trọng tải cực lớn có thể qua lại trên sông Mississippi dễ dàng.      Finally, the Huey P. Long (Huey Pierce Long, Jr.) bridge is named for the 40th governor of the state of Louisiana. This is a bridge that combines a road and a railroad rising to a height of 47 meters above ground level (tallest in the world), a height under which the heaviest ships can easily pass back and forth along the Mississippi River. Us Vietnamese people of plain language call the bridge Huỳnh Phi Long. Anyways, the rail bridge spans the river high above one's head not unlike a “flying dragon”. For this reason, the Vietnamese of New Orleans feel a sense of pride when they get to introduce guests from afar to the world records held by our city. As for me, I record a new notable record of the practice of “naming by sight” of the women and children, young and old, which everyone knows when they hear it.

Cây cầu dài uốn lượn giống như con rồng thăng thiên thật ngoạn mục, anh đùa bảo, người Việt ở New Orleans gọi đó là cầu Huỳnh Phi Long. Ngẫm nghĩ, đúng quá đi chứ! Phù hợp với tâm ý người Việt mình sống ở xứ người có những con đường mang tên danh nhân sử Việt thật hay biết mấy.

     A correspondent for Trẻ Magazine Louisiana, Phu Nguyen, took me to see the Huey P. Long Bridge, the tallest in the world. He told me facetiously that the Vietnamese in New Orleans call the long bridge, winding and soaring like a dragon ascending into heaven and quite pleasing to the eyes, the Huỳnh Phi Long [Huey P. Long; literally, yellow flying dragon] bridge. I thought to myself, that's so true! It is so fitting to the disposition of us Vietnamese people to live in a place that has roads named for such great, well-known Vietnamese historical figures.

Usage notes

In more formal contexts, the bridge and especially the historical figure are named as in English, albeit with a Vietnamized pronunciation such as Hưu Bi Loong or Hiu-i Bi Loong.
