Etymology[edit]

Umlauted variant (16th c., perhaps from a plural and/or the adjective höckerig) of older Hocker (15th c.), itself an intensified form of Hoger, from Middle High German hoger, from Old High German hogar (12th c.). Related with Hügel and hoch.
