From Middle High German lücke, lucke, from Old High German luccha (gap, space, opening, slit, crack, hatch), from Proto-West Germanic *lukkjā (hatch, trap door), from Proto-Germanic *lukjǭ (hole, opening, gap), from Proto-Indo-European *lewg- (to bend). Doublet of Loch (hole) and Luke (hatch), and see the former for more.[1]
