Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as liethorp in 943. Compound of an uncertain first element and Old Dutch thorp (village, settlement). The first elemented has been linked to Proto-Germanic *leuta (duplicitous), although this reading poses semantic difficulties. Compare Lierop.

See also Limburgish Lieërop.
