Icelandic[edit]
Alternative forms[edit]
- Málmhaugar m (correct analysis of -ö)
Etymology[edit]
From misinterpretation of Swedish Malmö (literally “Ore Hill”) (from Middle Danish Malmhauge), mistaking -ö for ö (“island”, ey in Icelandic), although -ö here has a different etymology, being derived from Old Norse haugr (Icelandic haugur, Swedish hög), of earlier Proto-Germanic and ultimate Proto-Indo-European origin.
