Etymology

Expressive loan of English Manhattan, a rebracketing that disregards syllable breaks in order to imitate a Sino-Vietnamese toponym. Ordinarily, when borrowing a name from English, Vietnamese applies the ngang (“level”) tone and sometimes the sắc (“sharp”) tone. By contrast, Mã Nhật Tân has ngã (“tripping”) and nặng (“heavy”) tones, which are uncommon in borrowings from Western languages.

     Đây là một sáng kiến của một ngân hàng Hoa kỳ tại Việt Nam (The Chase Manhattan). Theo quảng cáo ngày 26/10/1970 của Ngân Hàng Mã Nhật Tân «Đầu tiên tại Việt Nam, Mã Nhật Tân Ngân Hàng cấp phát một chứng chỉ ký thác định kỳ hoàn toàn không ghi danh tính của quý vị và ngân hàng cũng không lưu tích một lý lịnh nào.»

     This was an innovation by an American bank in Vietnam (The Chase Manhattan). According to an advertisement on October 26, 1970, by the Bank of Manhattan, “Bank of Manhattan issues a periodic trust certificate that is completely anonymous and does not preserve any commands.”

Usage notes

In more formal contexts, the borough is named as in English, albeit with a Vietnamized pronunciation such as Man-hát-tan.
