Etymology[edit]

From Thai แม่โขง (mɛ̂ɛ-kǒong), contracted form of แม่น้ำโขง (mɛ̂ɛ-náam-kǒong). Cognate with Lao ນ້ຳຂອງ (nam khǭng) or ແມ່ນ້ຳຂອງ (mǣ nam khǭng).

Alternatively, from Khmer មេគង្គ (mee kong, literally Mother river/gaṅgā).
