Etymology[edit]

From miðr (middle) +‎ garðr (yard; enclosured land; realm) or directly from Proto-Germanic *midjagardaz (Middle Earth). Cognate with Old English middangeard, Old Saxon middilgard, Old High German mittilgart, Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌿𐌽𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (midjungards).
