Etymology[edit]

First attested as aesterwerum in 1319. Borrowed from West Frisian Easterwierrum, a compound of Old Frisian aester (eastern) and the dative plural form of weer (artificial mound used for habitation). The element easter was added to distinguish the settlement from Lutkewierum.
