Etymology

With the change x < ś < s, from typical Eastern Old Novgorodian мѧсо (męso), inherited from Proto-Slavic *męso.

Reconstructed based on the Pskov dialectal Russian мя́хо (mjáxo, “meat”) and мяхно́й (mjaxnój), originating from Old Pskovian, where one of the dialectal features was s–sh and z–zh merger ‒ “shokanye” («шоканье») or lisping, which sometimes led to changes in the soft [sʲ] > [x].
