Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰṓy-n̥-kos (lengthened o-grade, literally frisky animal > hare), from *ǵʰey- (to drive). Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáyas (from which Sanskrit हय (háya, horse)), Proto-Armenian *jeioh (from which Armenian ձի (ji, horse)).
