[edit]Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰweh₁r-iHneh₂ or *ǵʰweh₁r-eyneh₂, from *ǵʰwer- (“wild animal”). By surface analysis, *źwēˀrís + *-īˀnāˀ. Cognate with Latin ferīna (< Proto-Italic *ferīnā).
