Derived from Proto-Indo-European *-éye-ti, from *-yeti. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *-janą, Proto-Celtic *-īti, Proto-Italic *-eō, Proto-Hellenic *-éyō, Proto-Indo-Iranian *-áyati.
