From Proto-Indo-European *bʰrews- (to break). Related to Latin frustum (bit, scrap), Proto-Germanic *brausijaną (compare Old English brȳsan, brīesan (to crush)), Old Church Slavonic бръснути (brŭsnuti, to rake), Proto-Albanian *brauša (compare Albanian breshër (hail)).
