Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *merkeh₂ (“girl”), from *mer- (“boy, girl”).[1] Compare Scottish Gaelic smarach (“lad”), Latin marītus (“husband”), Ancient Greek μεῖραξ (meîrax, “boy, girl”), Old Armenian մարի (mari, “hen”)), Sanskrit मर्य (marya, “young man, suitor”).
