Proto-Finnic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly a borrowing from Baltic: compare Lithuanian šonine (annex, side chamber), from šonas (side). Has been compared also with Permic words meaning 'warm': Komi-Permyak шоныд (šonyd, warm), Udmurt шуныт (šunyt)[1], but the comparison is both semantically and phonetically unlikely.[2]

Noun[edit]

*hooneh

  1. building
  2. room

Inflection[edit]

Descendants[edit]

  • Estonian: hoone
  • Finnish: huone
  • Karelian: huoneh
  • Võro: hoonõh, hoonõq
  • Votic: oonõ
