Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from earlier *kalwu and related to Proto-Samic *kālvō (whence Northern Sami gálvu (ware, object, thing)). Saarikivi (2009) proposes borrowing from Early Old East Slavic [Term?], from Proto-Slavic *kolъ.[1]
