[edit]Uncertain. Proposed to be an old borrowing from Proto-Germanic *slēdaz or *slēdiz, reflected in Old High German slāt (German Schlot (“chimney”)); however, this is uncertain, as no other Germanic cognates of this word are known.[1][2]
