Etymology

From pre-Germanic *magʰ-ot-(i-), a feminine derivative of *maguz (boy) (with the suffix also seen in *brūdiz (bride)),[1] but this pair of words is likely of foreign or substrate origin, as is the likely cognate Proto-Celtic *magot-axtā (young girl, servant girl).
