From Proto-Indo-European *strēl- (arrow), from Proto-Indo-European *ster-, *strē- (strip, stripe, line, streak, stream, arrow). Cognate with Lithuanian strėlė (arrow, dart, jib), Latvian strēle (arrow, dart) and Proto-Slavic *strěla (arrow).
