    From older *oktōwos with an odd unrounding of , from Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓwos, a thematization of *oḱtṓw. Cognate with Ancient Greek ὄγδοος (ógdoos).

    The Italic change of to is explained by Schrijver as the result of the delabialization of the laryngeal in *-eh₃wo- to *h₂ due the ensuing *w.[1]
