Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *umbi (around). Borrowed into Proto-Finno-Samic, Finnic cognates include Finnish umpi. Possibly borrowed even earlier into Proto-Finno-Permic, in which case cognates include Komi-Zyrian об (ob, heavy snowfall).
