Etymology[edit]

Probably substantized l-participle of an obsolete onomatopoeic verb *čuti (to grump) +‎ *-lъ, attested as Proto-Slavic *čьvati (to bark, to harass). Cognate (as per Bezlaj, Karaliūnas) with Lithuanian kiaũlė (pig).
