Proto-Slavic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Has been compared with Ancient Greek δολφóς (dolphós, gut), δελφῡ́ς (delphū́s, womb), Sanskrit गर्भ (garbha, fetus, womb) from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelbʰ-, however, (per Vasmer) semantically unsatisfactory.[1] Alternatively, akin to Ancient Greek γλάφω (gláphō, to dig, to hollow), Proto-Germanic *kulbaz (round object), or Proto-Germanic *gulbą (floor); the first two would trace to a Proto-Indo-European *gelbʰ- (to flay, to scrape), while the third (endorsed by Vasmer) traces to *gʰelbʰ- (to hollow out; groove, gutter).[2]
