[edit]Originally a diminutive form of *ȃje (“egg”) + *-ьce (“diminutive suffix”). From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ṓjika, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ōwyóm.[1] Compare Ossetian айк (ajk), айкӕ (ajkæ, “egg”) (from Proto-Iranian *Hāwyám (“egg”)).
