Etymology

    Originally a diminutive form of *ȃje (egg) +‎ *-ьce (diminutive suffix). From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ṓjika, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ōwyóm.[1] Compare Ossetian айк (ajk), айкӕ (ajkæ, egg) (from Proto-Iranian *Hāwyám (egg)).
