From Proto-Indo-European *bʰerh₁dyeh₂ (or *bʰerh₁deh₂ + *-j-), from *bʰer- (to bear (give birth to)) + *-d-

Compare Lithuanian ber̃ždžias (barren (of a cow)), ber̃gždžias (barren (of a cow)), Latin fordus (pregnant) (< *foridos), forda.
