Etymology[edit]

From an unattested *glьti (to mud) +‎ *-ьba, continuing Proto-Indo-European *gley- (to stick, to glue). Akin to Proto-Germanic *klibą (cliff).

Parallel to Proto-Slavic *glyba (mud, ooze) from *glew- (to conglomerate, to gather into a mass).
