Hirt's law

[edit]

@Mahagaja: According to Illich-Svitych, this law was also in Celtic. Gnosandes (talk) 17:08, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

With what effect? Even without accent retraction, Proto-Indo-European *ǵr̥h₂nóm would give Proto-Celtic *grānom, wouldn't it? —Mahāgaja · talk 17:10, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Mahagaja: No, as far as I know, it would be *-ar-, not *-rā-. But we have *-rā-, so the accent should be at the beginning of the form. Gnosandes (talk) 17:16, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gnosandes: What examples are there of unstressed Cr̥HC becoming CarC in Celtic? Matasovic gives CRāC as the only outcome of CRHC in Celtic and says nothing about it being confined to stressed syllables. As far as I know R̥ > aR only happens when there's no laryngeal after the syllabic sonorant, and when the more restricted change L̥T > LiT (where L = /l, r/ but not /n, m/ and where T = stops and /m/ but not other consonants) didn't apply. —Mahāgaja · talk 17:42, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
