Սիմակ

[edit]

User:Victar, where did you find Armenian Սիմակ (Simak)? It is a very new name, cannot be borrowed from Middle Iranian. The phonetics too are off; one would expect *Սեմակ (*Semak). Vahag (talk) 20:46, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Victar: Thanks. That was a wild speculation on his part. He does not include Սիմակ (Simak) in {{R:xcl:Martirosyan:2021}} dedicated to Armenian names of Iranian origin. On page 320, in connection with Սեմա-Վշնասպ (Sema-Všnasp), he does discuss the family of *SyaHmákah, without mentioning Սիմակ (Simak). As far as I can tell, that name appeared at the end of the 19th century among Armenians of the Russian empire. Probably borrowed from Сима́к (Simák), a diminutive of Си́мон (Símon).
