"Akin"

@Surjection, my understanding of the "akin" usage in etymologies is that this indicates a similarity to something else, not necessarily a relation. This Proto-Turkic term kara is broadly similar to Mongolic and Japonic, no? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 23:41, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

akin: "of the same kin". I perceive it as meaning the same as "related to" or even "cognate with". Similarities without implying relation are often expressed by comparisons ("compare ..."). — surjection ⟨??⟩ 11:34, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
