Etymology

From sør (“south”) +‎ Aurdal (“place name”), literally “southern Aurdal”. The official name was changed from Søndre Aurdal to Sør-Aurdal by royal resolution on 3 November 1917. Aurdal is probably derived from a lost river name Aura, related to aurr (“gravel”), with dalr (“valley”) as the final element.
