Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German stigliz, stigeliz, stiglitze, stigelitze, from Old Czech stehlec (now Czech stehlík, Slovak stehlík), cognate to Polish szczygieł, Ukrainian щи́голь (ščýholʹ), Russian щего́л (ščegól) for the same bird. Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *ščegъlъ.
