English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain, but two name origins exist:

  • The community is named after the Stoney (Nakoda) First Nations, who historically camped in the surrounding area, and;
  • According to Dr. James Hector, a geologist on the Palliser Expedition, the town is named after boulders in the area.
