From English strepto- (“shaped like a twisted chain”) + -coccus (“spherical bacteria”), from Ancient Greek στρεπτός (streptós, “twisted, pliant”) + κόκκος (kókkos, “grain, seed”), for the bacteria grow in chains or pairs.
