From English strepto- (shaped like a twisted chain) +‎ -coccus (spherical bacteria), from Ancient Greek στρεπτός (streptós, twisted, pliant) +‎ κόκκος (kókkos, grain, seed), for the bacteria grow in chains or pairs.
