Eleanor Irwin, Colour terms in Greek poetry (→ISBN, 1974), page 28, lists some of the points in favour of identifying this (as we currently do) as meaning "dark" and not just "blue": "Another term which seems to vary strangely in meaning is κῠᾰ́νεος. In the colour theorists it is defined as "blue," specifically "dark blue" (Plato Timaeus 68x, Theophr. De Sns. 77). But if we translate it as "blue" in early poetry, we produce effects which are hard to imagine: blue clouds (II. 13.563), hair (II. 22.401-403), earth (Od. 12.243); a blue bull (h.
