Stephen. This word sounds substandard or dialectal to me. It is used occasionally but I wouldn't use it in textbooks or dictionaries, for example. Hmm, it's now even included in gramota.ru Anatoli 04:59, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but it’s still a Russian word and merits a place here. We also have rare, old, and colloquial English words. That is not a reason to exclude детёнок. The reason for its place in a list is purely alphabetical. O comes before ы. —Stephen 07:23, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, a usage note is certainly helpful. I suppose just that it is rare and colloquial, or perhaps uneducated usage, and indicating a more appropriate term. —Stephen 07:58, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
