It's pretty trivial to notice that ili = i+li, where clitic particle li with inherent notion of "conditionality" was binded to logical conjunction conjunction (deprecated template usage) i. However, that kind of etymology which reduces to morphological decomposition is only secondary to the real etymology: the word is inherited from earlier ili which appears to be prevalent only in South Slavic branch. Russian или might as well be Church Slavonicism, but I can't tell for sure; will have to investigate whether it appears in Old Polish & Old Czech (i.e. is it reconstructible for Common Slavic). --Ivan Štambuk 19:04, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
