The Chinese Wikipedia article 和制汉语 states that Chen Liwei from Seijo University debunked the theory that all modern words were borrowed back into Chinese due to earlier evidence in Chinese-English dictionaries. Concepts like "bank" already existed in Chinese and it was the Japanese who borrowed from the Chinese.
