RFD discussion: December 2019–March 2020[edit]

The following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process (permalink).

It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.

I don't speak Dutch but it appears that all of these quotes are directly quoting from English, including other English words. DTLHS (talk) 05:01, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. The last three quotes clearly indicate this is code-switching by putting the phrase between quotation marks. In the first, remaining one this is not so immediately obvious, but that is because it is a record of spoken text, and in speech one cannot employ the usual typographical clues for code switching.  --Lambiam 10:42, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There's just no proper Dutch term for it, so we need to explain in English what we mean:

I can likewise find many cites of get your act together in Dutch texts.[1][2][3][4][5] I could go on with other phrases, such as is everybody happy?. Maybe there is no proper Dutch term for this either, yet IMO it is still code switching.  --Lambiam 21:37, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Lambiam, the question is, are English terms becoming Dutch or are the Dutch becoming English. Code switching could technically be correct, but the Dutch do it an awful lot.
IMHO, if you'd look at every text that describes "agree to disagree" (not that you could, especially as there is no obvious translation) and a considerable amount uses the English words, it's a loanword. I think get your act together would often be described as "maak wat van jezelf", "zet jezelf terug op de rails", "ontplooi jezelf", "krijg je leven op orde", etc. When describing the concept of agree to disagree though, we have few viable alternatives. One might decide een meningsverschil te laten rusten.[6]  --Lambiam 03:57, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't agree to differ a variant? --Backinstadiums (talk) 11:15, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
