The definition doesn't look right, although it was taken from Wikipedia. On closer look, it seems that this is just the ice in an arena (I'm kinda assuming that curling isnt normally played in an arena, but know nothing of the sport) --Rising Sun talk? 02:35, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well curling is usually played in an arena, isn't it? Assuming the definition is correct (which I doubt) this would be idiomatic as it's a euphemism for sub-standard ice used for curling matches. Maybe move to RFV for that reason. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:50, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it is necessarily substandard. Just different. A simple Google News seach suggests this ice is just different - maybe even better. Note the following quotes.
You always want to get back and get that experience and play on that arena ice.
Every time we get to play on arena ice is special
We don't want to put our backs to the wall early, but we're back on arena ice, which is our favourite
We're happy with the way we started our year but we still have to play better and we're going to be playing on arena ice, which is completely different.
The ice conditions were similar to Edmonton and we don't get to play on arena ice very often.

Somewhat damaged your own case there, it does look idiomatic to me as it's taken on implied meaning, thus more the sum of its parts. Mglovesfun (talk) 13:26, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Curling is best played on ice that is specifically made for curling. I don't go into details, but the requirements are different from those of skating ice. Thus "arena ice" refers to makeshift curling ice made on a skating arena, with properties that differ both from skating ice and perfect curling ice.
