Etymology[edit]

This etymology follows the general consensus. However, an intermediate word is really required for this origin, in order to link the meaning of BLUNT. An alternative etymology is that of the p.p. of archaic English BLIN (to cease)[5], that might possibly be BLUNT[4]. Should this be so, it might possibly answer to the stem of BLIND[3]. Compare also Welsh BLINO (to tire)[6]; but if this word were not merely used in speech before its written form, then it would have to be Scandinavian[7].

[0] means 'Absolutely not; [1] means 'Exceedingly unlikely'; [2] means 'Very dubious'; [3] means 'Questionable'; [4] means 'Possible'; [5] means 'Probable'; [6] means 'Likely'; [7] means 'Most Likely' or *Unattested; [8] means 'Attested'; [9] means 'Obvious' - only used for close matches within the same language or dialect, at linkable periods.
