Removal[edit]

Why was 馬桶 (mǎtǒng) removed without comment? The sources show that this term used to be used to mean "chamber pot" before the advent of modern toilets. See this Google search. 24.29.238.60 03:37, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The relevant discussion took place on my talk page (User_talk:A-cai#chamber_pot). The term "chamber pot" is more specific than 馬桶, which generically refers to any bowl or container in which one does number one or number two (but most often is translated as toilet nowadays). -- A-cai 13:04, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks; if you could start an entry on 馬桶 it would be great. However, "chamber pot" is still often used as a possible translation for 馬桶 in the sources, even if it doesn't match exactly. (See the above sources.) 24.29.238.60 05:41, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Synonyms[edit]

Are potty, pot and po synonyms for chamber pot? Maro 18:46, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

shit or get off the pot is a common expression (verb? proverb?). I suppose that such a usage of "pot" must be a shortening of "chamberpot". I am only aware of "potty" as a childish term in "go potty" and also in "potty chair". DCDuring TALK 19:24, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
