So what is the difference between an "abbreviation" and a "short form"? Does the wikidef of the former term cover this difference? Is the latter term idiomatic? Could you make an entry for it please? I've never been aware of an abbreviation not being a short form of a word, or do you consider it to be only one specific type of short form? — Hippietrail 09:51, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)

 Done. I've removed it from the definition entirely, since a charset is not an abbreviation (in the same way a dog is not a word, though dog is). I suppose at the time Paul G was thinking abbreviations had to be initialisms. Equinox 19:13, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
